Students at DLD College London were treated to an inspiring visit from Zandi Ndlovu, a marathon runner and advocate for diversity in sport, as part of the school’s Black History Month celebrations. Zandi shared her personal journey from starting her running journey with Couch to 5k during the Covid-19 pandemic to becoming an Adidas marathon runner taking part in marathons in London, Berlin and Lisbon.
Speaking to a packed atrium, Zandi shared her journey, fond memories and her motivation to keep pushing herself though admits an ultra marathon might be a step too far! Beyond running, Zandi reflected on what Black History Month means to her, “It showcases the story of black people and how we’ve helped build this country“. However, Zandi also expressed mixed feelings on Black History Month, and that whilst celebrating black achievements is positive, it should not be consigned to a single month and that he story and impact of black people continues!
Zandi also took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of representation in sport and beyond highlighting that less than 2% of London Marathon runners are black, “When I started running competitively, there were very few Black women in the field, especially in marathons”.
Her story resonated with the students, many of whom were inspired by her message of perseverance that they can take into their preparations for exams and take up running themselves.
Assistant Principal, Fumi St Marthe expressed her gratitude for Zandi’s visit, highlighting the importance of sharing diverse stories during Black History Month. “Zandi’s story reminds us of the power of determination and self-belief. Her achievements, both as a marathon runner and as a voice for diversity, are truly inspirational.”
The event was part of a series of activities organized by the school to mark Black History Month, focusing on the celebration of black excellence and the contributions of individuals in the UK and beyond.
