History of Art at Augustus Pugin’s St George’s Cathedral

26th June 24

As part of the College’s Qualification Day, 26 June 2024, a group of DLD students studied a short History of Art course on ‘Church Architecture c. 35 – c. 1600’ which was led by Dr Gregory Slysz, the Head of History and Cathy David, the Head of Classics.

The course took the students on a historical journey through hundreds of years of history, from simple House churches of the time of Jesus Christ during the Roman period to the great medieval Gothic Cathedrals. In the afternoon, the group went on a trip to Augustus Pugin’s St George’s Cathedral, Southwark, to experience a Gothic (revival) Cathedral first hand and to identify the different architectural features which they encountered during the course. All completed this task and the Kahoot quiz very successfully. An enjoyable time was had by all. And much was learnt.
