9th May 24
On Thursday 25th April we had a last minute invitation to the British Physics Olympiad Lecture at the Royal Society in Carlton Terrace. It was a great opportunity for some of our Year 12 Physics cohort to hear about some ground breaking Physics in a lecture by Professor Michael Cates.
Professor Cates is the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, a position held by Stephen Hawkings and Isaac newton to name a few. The lecture on Non Newtonian Fluids was dynamic, with demonstrations, explanations and discussion of new developments. As always with new research it brought some challenging ideas together in an accessible manor, which inspired our students to think hard and apply their knowledge to the frontiers of science.
After the talk we had a chance to look around the elegant building and see some of the most important exhibits, such as a copy of Newton’s Principia. We all enjoyed the visit and are now ready to bring research level ideas into our studies.
