On Saturday 28th April DLD College London students took part in a charity run, raising funds for the Lady Garden Foundation, a charity set up by a parent of one of our day students, Amber va Dam.
The Lady Garden Foundation is a national women’s health charity, raising awareness and funding for gynaecological health. Founded in 2014, over the last ten years, The Lady Garden Foundation has grown from the initial campaign to yearly events, education programs and funding cutting-edge studies. The charity aims to make a difference though education, awareness, breaking taboos, and funding research.
EDUCATION – The LGF work to educate women so that they know the signs and symptoms of all five gynaecological cancers. (78% of women don’t know the signs and symptoms).
AWARENESS – They drive awareness so that every woman takes action because cervical screening saves lives. (1 in 4 don’t attend cervical screening appointments).
TABOO BREAKING – They continue to break taboos to normalise the conversation around gynaecological health.
RESEARCH – The LGF continue to fund life-saving research & treatment to improve the outcomes of the five gynaecological cancers.
Some of our DLD boarders, including members of the boarding team staff, took part in the 5km and 10km runs in Battersea Park. Arian, Shazmeen, Tasha, Amber, Anaika, and Teagan all smashed it at the 5km, while Makayla and Nita took on the 10km.
It was a great event, with over 400 people taking part, as well as those who came to support their friends and family and raise money for the Lady Garden Foundation. The event was well organised, with easy bib collection and chip timing, there was music, a coffee van, and bright fluorescent pink Lady Garden t-shirts, all adding to a great atmosphere for the day. The charity have a lot of fantastic sponsors supporting their cause, so every runner received a tote bag upon finishing the race, full of haircare and skincare products, and many cool discounts!
The DLD Student Council also organised an ice cream sale in college last week to do some additional fundraising, which went really well, making our total amount raised £434 for the Lady Garden Foundation!
This is a fantastic charity to support so let’s hope this can become a DLD fundraising tradition! …Who’s running next year?!
